The place of choice

Mariefred is a charming small town where you can stroll through small alleys with picturesque houses, visit Gripsholm Castle and enjoy the wide range of restaurants.

There are plenty of opportunities for natural experiences here. You can paddle along Marviksleden, cycle on Näckrosleden or try your hand at fishing in Lake Mälaren. For the adventurous, there is also the opportunity to try horseback riding in the wilderness.

Strängnäs municipality offers proximity to Lake Mälaren and unique natural areas in the middle of the rapidly growing Mälardalen region, which provides good conditions for people at all stages of life to find their dream home.

A place steeped in history

Mariefred grew up next to Gripsholm Castle in the late 16th century and was granted town rights in 1605 by Charles IX. Gustav Vasa rebuilt the castle. The town center, the so-called Gammelgården, consisted of housing and outbuildings for the castle's inhabitants in the 16th century. It is possible that the Carthusian monastery Pax Mariae, built in 1493, was also located here, which was taken over by Gustav Vasa in 1526 and demolished shortly thereafter.

Mariefred remained a very small village whose existence was largely due to its proximity to the castle. Already in the 1770s, Mariefred had less than 500 inhabitants. In the 19th century, trade in Mariefred was a local issue. For a long time, the share of crafts in employment was high compared to other cities in Sweden. The extraordinarily represented was agriculture. The population grew slowly and only at the end of the 19th century did over 1,000 people live in Mariefred. The character of the relatively low-growth town was preserved throughout the 20th century. Today almost 7000 people live in Mariefred.
