Five tips to make more space in your kitchen

When it comes to smart storage in the kitchen, there are so many clever tricks to help you make more space in the kitchen. Whether it's decorating with modern solutions or making use of the spaces that many people forget about, you can get more storage options and more floor space for you to navigate when cooking dinner or having friends over.

Follow our five kitchen storage tips to make your kitchen feel bigger and find smarter storage for the kitchen tools you use less often.

Store at height and have less space to clean

The absolute best tip for both large and small kitchens is to make use of the surfaces that many people forget exist. The areas between the ceiling and the fridge, freezer and cabinets are usually only noticed when it's time to clean up in the spring. But with some clever interior design, you can give yourself extra storage space while hiding away things you don't use very often.

Do you have a kitchen machine with dozens of accessories that you only use once a year? Do you have several large pots and pans that are only needed during Christmas and Midsummer? Install a cabinet above the fridge and you'll instantly have more space in the lower cabinets for things you use every day.

The budget option is to put your items on top of the fridge, freezer and cabinets and cover them with a tablecloth in a subtle color that blends in with the kitchen decor.

At the bottom of the kitchen there is plenty of storage space.

If you can't find your solution at the top of the kitchen, look at the bottom instead. There are often plinths underneath the countertop that you can replace with push-opening drawers. This part of the kitchen is usually the last thing you think about when looking for kitchen storage and kitchen fittings, but there are plenty of options at your local DIY store if you want to install a smart plinth drawer. The hook is your best friend

At Ikea, Bauhaus and K-Rauta you can find really smart solutions that allow you to hang everything from wine glasses to spatulas to save space in drawers and cabinets. The best thing about this solution is that you can put smart hooks under your existing kitchen cabinets or on a free wall, choose the solution that suits your kitchen best.

Hanging glasses from the ceiling above a kitchen island also gives the kitchen a bar feel that many people appreciate. There are also many hooks that you can hang on the cabinet door, either inside or outside, where you can hang everything from kitchen towels to recycling bins.

Get a bench for extra seating

A bench may not sound like a revolutionary tip, but benches take up much less space than chairs and serve the same function. A flexible bench is both practical when you have guests and need extra seating, and also serves as a handy relief surface when you're baking at home.

If you have a kitchen island that you usually eat at, you can customize a bench that is perfect for your kitchen and if you want a bench that can be placed under the kitchen table, you can find many different models and sizes at your local furniture store.

Replace cabinets with drawers

This is more for those who live in a condominium and are planning to renovate the kitchen or are looking for a larger solution that gives the kitchen a whole new feel. Traditional under-counter kitchen cabinets are not very practical compared to modern drawers. Replacing one cabinet with two deep drawers will give you more practical storage and make it easier to find your kitchen accessories when it's time to cook dinner. It's easier to organize in a drawer than in a cabinet, and you don't have to squat and search the back of a cabinet if you have smart drawer cabinets. You can find both drawer cabinets and pull-out drawers hiding behind cabinet doors from all kitchen manufacturers today.
